Jim Zabel started working at WHO in 1944. Since then he has called 6,000 play-by-play events across the country. Dubbed the “Voice of Iowa”, Zabel has been in the front seat and behind the mic for every Iowa football and basketball game for 50 years, five Rose Bowl Games, three Holiday Bowls, two Peach Bowls, two Alamo Bowls, two Sun Bowls, Gator Bowl, Freedom Bowl, Kickoff Classic (New York), 48 NCAA Basketball Tournament Games, 10 NIT Tournament Games, Iowa High School Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments for 52 years, selected basketball games of Drake and Iowa State for 20 years, Drake Relays for 60 years, “Let’s Go Bowling” (WHO-TV) for 33 years, eleven Iowa Triple-A Baseball games on WHO-TV, 10 Shrine All-Star Football Games, seven years of Iowa Barnstormers Arena Football on WHO Radio (approximately 150 games). Five major golf tournaments on WHO-TV, including National Amateur in 1956, at Wakonda Club.
